Sinds ons favoriete sushi restaurant werd verbouwd, hernoemd en stopte met sushi verkopen zijn mijn vriendje en ik op zoek naar een nieuw favoriet sushi restaurant. Ik denk dat we het hebben gevonden: NOH in de Prinsestraat in Den Haag.

Op internet zocht ik naar de sushi restaurants die enigzins in de buurt zijn (best een klus aangezien een heel aantal niet-all-you-can-eat restaurants zijn verdwenen in het afgelopen jaar). In een review las ik dat personeel van de Japanse ambassade geregeld bij NOH eet en dus dacht ik dat het het proberen wel waard zou zijn.

Vis en andere ingrediënten liggen in een koelvak ter hoogte van de bar. Achter de bar bereid de kok de gerechten in het zicht (niet aan tafel wat ik maar irritant vind, maar aan een bar waar je als je wil ook aan kan eten). De kwaliteit van het eten is niet te vergelijken met een All-you-can-eat sushi restaurant. Ik heb er geen hap gegeten waar ik niet van genoten heb. Mijn ervaringen bij All-you-can-eat sushi restaurants lopen uiteen van te vet, te taai, te koud en te warm maar eigenlijk is het te omvatten als niet echt lekkere sushi. Als vegetariër die van sushi houdt wil ik graag keuze hebben. In de meeste restaurants is niet veel keus hebben niet zo erg. Ik ben sowieso slecht in kiezen tussen gerechten. Maar wat ik lekker vind aan sushi eten is juist de verschillende smaken. Bij NOH heb ik de keuze uit minstens 5 verschillende soorten sushi, er is vegetarische tempura, vegetarische misosoep en edamame. Al mijn favorieten zijn er en geen enkel gerecht valt tegen.

Het restaurant is leuk aangekleed. Er zijn tafeltjes maar er is ook een mooi aangeklede bar waarachter de kok sushi maakt. Op één van de muren is een vrouw afgebeeld in traditioneel Japans kostuum. Deze afbeelding staat ook op de grote borden. Erg leuk bedacht. Het personeel is heel erg aardig en behulpzaam, alleen op de rekening hebben we 20 minuten zitten wachten. Maar het was erg druk en het heerlijke eten doet dat ene punt van kritiek volledig teniet.

Mocht je een keer bij NOH willen gaan eten vergeet dan niet te reserveren want de zaak is niet heel erg groot en zit vaak vol. Ook kun je er eten afhalen maar geef je bestelling wel van te voren door om te voorkomen dat je lang moet wachten. Het adres is Prinsestraat 77 in Den Haag.

English: NOH sushi & sake in The Hague (The Netherlands) is my new favorite sushi restaurant. It has lots of options if your a vegetarian (like me) and everything tastes amazing. A lot of good sushi restaurants in The Hague have disappeared and in return came bad quality All-You-Can-Eat restaurants. I've tried some and I really don't like their greasy, low-on-taste food. Besides that, I find that they have very limited options for vegetarians and some of them put tables much to close to each other. So it's save to say all-you-can-eat sushi is not my thing. But now we have found NOH in the Prinsestraat, I am very happy to eat sushi again. If you plan to go there be sure to make a reservation because they are fully booked rather fast. They also do take-away but if you don't want to wait to long they advise you to call in advance so they can make everything ready for you when you come to pick it up.

Edit: toeval bestaat niet, ik kwam er toevallig achter wat NOH betekend. Het is een klassieke vorm van Japans muzikaal drama. Elementen uit Stephen Sondheim's (Sondheim is mijn favoriete musicalcomponist) musical Pacific Overtures zijn zelfs gebaseerd op dit genre. Met zo'n link kon het bijna niet anders dan mijn nieuwe favoriete sushi restaurant worden!

Thee, Taart & Textiel 2013

Vorig jaar werd Thee, Taart & Textiel voor het eerst georganiseerd. Een leuk evenement boordevol tweedehands kleding voor een wel heel klein prijsje, thee en heerlijke zoete en hartige taarten. Toen op facebook bekend werd dat er dit jaar weer een Thee, Taart en Textiel zou worden georganiseerd heb ik het direct in mijn agenda gezet. Want ik vond het vorig jaar erg leuk. Heerlijk in het zonnetje (hopelijk dit jaar weer) browsen door de kleding stukken en tussen door genieten van biologische taart en een kopje thee.

Buiten dat de kleding groen is omdat het allemaal tweedehands is, gaat de opbrengst van de hele dag ook nog eens naar verschillende goede doelen (o.a. Slimme Boefjes, Goed Gekleed aan de Gang, Weggeefwinkel en Crowdfunding voor een theaterproject). De kleding wordt verkocht voor kleine prijsjes dus als iets leuks ziet heb je eigenlijk geen reden om het te laten hangen. 

Maar om Thee, Taart & Textiel te kunnen organiseren is er natuurlijk wel kleding nodig! Heb je nog mooie dames- , heren- en/of kinderkleding, wol of speelgoed over waar je graag vanaf wilt, zodat je een goede reden hebt om tijdens Thee, Taart & Textiel je garderobe weer aan te vullen? Best of British Nº 8: Historische series

De BBC zenders zijn mijn favoriete zenders en de BBC staat onder anderen bekend als maker van de beste historische series (op 1 serie na werden onderstaande series allemaal gemaakt door de BBC. Alleen Mr Selfridge is van de hand van ITV, de producent die ook Downton Abbey maakte). Op het moment kijk ik deze series: Call the Midwife, The Paradise, Mr Selfridge, de docu serie Turn Back Time; The Family en de mini serie The Secret of Crickley Hall.

Call the Midwife speelt zich af in de jaren '50 in een arbeiderswijk in Londen. De series is gebaseerd op de memoires van vroedvrouw en zuster Jennifer Worth. De serie begint wanneer Jenny Lee (de meisjesnaam van Worth) aankomt bij Nonnatus House, een nonnenklooster dat tevens dient als klein ziekenhuis en een praktijk met vroedvrouwen. De kijkcijfers van de serie overstegen in het eerste seizoen de kijkcijfers van Downton Abbey, de laatste aflevering van het tweede seizoen is recentelijk uitgezonden en het derde seizoen staat al gepland voor 2014. Naast de bescheiden verhaallijnen van Jenny en haar collega's (bestaande uit jonge vroedvrouwen en nonnen) worden elke aflevering ook enkele afgeronde verhalen verteld over geboortes en patiënten.

English: 'Call the Midwife' is a series based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. Jenny Lee (Worth's maiden name) starts working as a mid-wife in the '50s in a working class neighborhood in London. Besides the small story lines of Jenny and her colleagues (consisting of nuns and other young midwives), every episode also features rounded up stories of births and patients. 

Zowel The Paradise als Mr Selfridge spelen zich af rondom een warenhuis in Engeland aan het begin van de 20ste eeuw. Beide series zijn alleen al het bekijken waard door de mooie vormgeving. Hier kun je een artikel lezen over het creëren van de set van The Paradise.

The Paradise is gebaseerd op het boek Au Bonheur de Dames van Emile Zola. John Moray is de eigenaar van het eerste warenhuis in Noord Engeland, The Paradise. Zijn vrouw is overleden maar de omstandigheden rondom haar dood zijn gehuld in mysterie. Moray's grootste investeerder is Lord Glendenning, wiens dochter vastberaden is om met Moray te trouwen. Denise Lovett is een meisje uit een dorp wiens oom een winkel heeft in de straat waar The Paradise is gevestigd. Hij wordt langzaam weggeconcurreerd door het nieuwe warenhuis en hoewel hij het heeft beloofd is hij momenteel niet in staat om Denise in dienst te nemen. Daarop solliciteert Denise bij The Paradise en al snel blijkt dat zij een groot talent heeft voor verkoop. Haar meerdere, Miss Audrey, is echter niet gewend aan zoveel inzicht en durf. Samen met de jaloerse Clara, net als Denise werkzaam bij dameskleding, doet Miss Audrey een verwoede poging om Denise tegen te werken.

English: 'The Paradise' is based on a novel by Emile Zola. John Moray is the owner of The Paradise, the first departmentstore in the north of England. His wife died but nobody is allowed to talk about it. Moray's financier is Lord Glendenning, whose daughter has set her mind on marrying Moray. Denise Lovett has come to the city to work for her uncle who is a dress maker with his shop in the street where The Paradise just opened. Slowly but steadily he is being forced out of bussiness by the new departmentstore. Although he promised to take Denise on he isn't able to do that now and Denise decides to apply for a job as shopgirl at The Paradise. Very soon it becomes clear that Denise has a great talent for sales. Miss Audrey, the head of her department together with her jealous co-worker, Clara, try everything to make Denise fail at her job. 

Mr. Selfridge is een Amerikaanse zakenman die een warenhuis opent in Londen. De serie heeft een aantal afleveringen nodig om alle personages te introduceren maar na een aflevering of drie wordt de serie niet alleen visueel maar ook dramatisch heel leuk om naar te kijken. De verhaallijnen volgen de familie van Selfridge en de werknemers van het warenhuis. Selfridge is een man die van spanning houdt. Hij gokt, drinkt, heeft affaires, nodigt wereldberoemde mensen uit in zijn winkel en probeert het meest vernieuwende personeel aan te trekken.

English: Mr. Selfridge is an American bussinessman who opens a departmentstore in London. The series needs a couple of episodes to introduce all characters but after the first three episodes the series becomes dramaticaly interesting besides being visually interesting. We follow the Selfridge family but also a couple of employees from the shop. Selfridge is a man who likes excitement. He gambles, drinks, has affaires, invites celebrities to his store and hires staff that likes to innovate.

Turn Back Time; The Family is geen dramaserie maar een soort documentaire. 4 gezinnen leven 5 weken het leven van hun voorouders. Elke week leven ze volgens de gebruiken van een ander decennium. De eerste week wordt er geleefd zoals in de Edwardian Era, in de tweede week zijn de jaren '20/'30 aan de beurt, gevolgd door de Tweede Wereldoorlog, de jaren '60 en de jaren '70. De gezinnen wonen in dezelfde straat. Één huis is upper-class, één huis is middle-class en één huis working-class. Op basis van een voorouder van elk gezin wordt bepaald wie in welk huis woont. Tussen aflevering 3 en 4 in moet één van de families vertrekken, zoals één van de voorouders van dit gezin verhuisde naar een buitenwijk. Hun plaats wordt gevuld door een familie waarvan een voorouder als immigrant naar Engeland kwam in de jaren '60.  Voor Turn Back Time; The Family was er al Turn Back Time; The Highstreet. In deze serie staat niet het gezin maar de winkelstraat in het middelpunt. Ik heb deze serie nog niet gezien maar hij is ongetwijfeld net zo boeiend als de huidige serie.

English: 'Turn Back Time; The Family' is not a drama series, but more of an documentairy. 4 families trade their lives for 5 weeks to live the lifes of their ancestors. Every week they live according to the ways of another decade. The first week they live like in the Edwardian Era, the second week it's the 20s/30s, followed by the Second World War, the 60s and the 70s. The families live in the same street. One house is fitted like the house of an upper-class family, one like a middle-class family and one of a working class-family. The living conditions of one of the ancestors of each family decides which family will live in which house. between the third and forth episode one of the families has to leave just like their ancestor moved to a suburb. Their place is filled by a family who has an ancestor that arrived in England as an immigrant. Before 'Turn Back Time; The Family' there was 'Turn Back Time; The Highstreet'. In this series it's not the family but the shopkeeper that we follow. I haven't this series yet but I'm sure it will be just as interesting.  

The Secret of Crickley Hall is een mini-serie van 3 afleveringen. De serie speelt zich in beginsel af in het heden maar we zien ook flashbacks uit de jaren '40. Een Londense familie verhuist voor korte tijd naar Crickley Hall i.v.m. het werk van de vader van het gezin. Als snel gebeuren er onverklaarbare dingen in het huis en na wat rondvragen blijkt het landhuis in 1943 een weeshuis te zijn geweest waar kinderen uit grote steden werden ondergebracht i.v.m. de oorlog. Tijdens een overstroming zijn op twee kinderen na alle weeskinderen verdronken. 

De serie is een beetje van alles, dramaserie (het zoontje van het gezin raakt aan het begin van de eerste aflevering vermist), historische serie, horror (vanwege de geesten die in het huis lijken rond te spoken) en thriller (vanwege een moordlustige man die door geesten wordt geteisterd danwel geestes ziek is). Ik hou zelf helemaal niet van horror en thriller maar door het historische element werd ik toch nieuwsgierig. De serie was iets te eng naar mijn smaak maar ik moest hem afzien omdat de eerste aflevering me wel ongelofelijk nieuwsgierig maakte.

English: 'The Secret of Crickley Hall' is a mini-series of three episodes. The series is about a modern-day family that temporarily moves to Crickley Hall. Although the series is set in the presence, there are also flashbacks to the 40s. Soon after the family's arrival inexplicable things start happening at Crickley Hall. After asking around in the village they find out that the mansion was an orphanage in 1943, where children from cities were accommodated because of the war. During a flood all but two children died inside the Hall.

The series has a bit of everything. It's is a drama (the son of the family is missing), it is a historical series, there's horror (because the Hall seems to be haunted) and thriller (because of murderous elderly man who is either haunted by ghosts or mentally ill). I am not into horror or thrillers at all but because of the historical element in the story I became very curious. I found the series a bit to scary for my taste but I had to see all three episodes after I saw the first one because I reallywanted to know how it would end.

A Happy Pair uit 1890 is het 1ste door Beatrix Potter geïllustreerde boek. De eerste uitgever waar ze eerder kerstkaartontwerpen aan had verkocht wees dit boekje af. De tweede uitgever, Hildesheimer & Faulkner, accepteerde het en stuurde haar een cheque. Dit is de eerste en enige editie van het boekje en het werd in 2010 geveild voor £12.000. Het boekje werd geschreven door Frederick E. Weatherly en bevat 6 chromolithograph illustraties van Potter's konijn, Benjamin Bunny. Het boekje is gebonden met een koord van witte zijde met 2 kwastjes.

English: 'A Happy Pair' from 1890 is the first book that was illustrated by Beatrix Potter. Her first publisher (who had published some christmas cards designs from her) declined this book. The second publisher, Hildesheimer & Faulkner, accepted the book and send her a cheque. This is the first and only edition of the book and it was sold at auction in 2010 for £12.000. The book was written by Frederick E. Weatherly and contained 6 chromolthograph drawings of Benjamin Bunny. The book is bound with a white satin rope with tassels.

Frieke Janssens - Smoking Kids

On Froot.nl I read about the photo series 'Smoking Kids' that Frieke Janssens made. On her website frieke.com writes the following about this series: "A YouTube video of a chainsmoking Indonesian toddler inspired me to create this series, "Smoking Kids". The video highlighted the cultural differences between the east and west, and questioned notions of smoking being a mainly adult activity. Adult smokers are the societal norm, so I wanted to isolate the viewer's focus upon the issue of smoking itself. I felt that children smoking would have a surreal impact upon the viewer and compel them to truly see the acts of smoking rather than making assumptions about the person doing the act. Coincidentally around the time of the "Smoking Kids" gallery opening, a law was passed, and smoking has been banned from Belgian bars. There was an outcry from the public about government intervention, feelings that freedom was being oppressed, and that adults were being treated like children. With health reasons driving many cities to ban smoking, the culture around smoking has a retro feel, like the time period of "Mad Men," when smoking on a plane or in a restaurant was not unusual. The aesthetics of smoke and the particular way smokers gesticulate with their hands and posture cannot be denied, but among the different tribes of "Smoking Kids," - Glamour, Jazz, and The Marginal - there is a nod to less attractive aspects, on the line between the beauty and ugliness of smoking. To assure you of the safety of the children, there were no real cigarettes on set. Instead, chalk and sticks of cheese were the prop stand ins, while candles and incense provided the wisps of smoke."

The photos can be purchased as a book with detachable cards for €19,95. This way you can use them as postcards or hang them on your wall. In the video below you can watch a short making of of Smoking Kids. At the end of it there is also an excerpt of the youtube video that inspired Frieke Janssens to make the photo's. 

The website of Frieke Janssens is worth a look anyway but a second project I found really interesting is   Your Last Shot. She says the following about that: “In reality, those left behind need to find a photo quickly that is ‘ok’ and usually it requires some Photoshop retouching. And the question remains: how would the deceased feel about this photo? Maybe he or she would have untagged themselves from it?” The series of ‘Your Last Shot’ will reflect a combination of the portrayed’s wishes and the photographer’s style. “My personal preference goes to static portraits as they were taken at the occasion of weddings at the beginning of the 20th century. My aim is to make an iconic portrait that is beautiful, serene and fearless, preferably with a gentle smile, indicating that the model is clearly aware of the fact that this portrait will be used for a very long time to come.” Sinister? “Not really, life and death are inevitably linked. In Belgium there still seems to be a taboo around the thought of death. As a photographer, I feel that the moment when one reflects about their own death is a precious moment to be shared and portrayed.” The portrayed will receive their ‘last portrait’ printed on porcelain, so that it actually can be used when the time has come. Which is hopefully many years from now. “In each series, I try to make people reflect on a specific subject. Should we not care more about that one photo that will be used infinitely? Would you not prefer to choose that photo yourself? By the way, it strikes me that, when people visit someone's grave, they like to take a walk through the entire cemetery. And what do they do? Peter Pan, The Never Ending Story

Vol verwachting trok ik naar het Ziggo Dome om daar 'the next big thing' te gaan bekijken. Mijn verwachtingen waren hoog, niet in de minste plaats omdat producent MusicHall nogal wat beloofd in zijn aankondigingen van hun Arena Tour. Ik verwachte dus minstens het niveau en de verrassingsgraad van Soldaat van Oranje. Het spijt me te moeten zeggen dat het zelfs niet gepast is Soldaat van Oranje en Peter Pan The Never Ending Story in dezelfde zin te noemen.

Eerst een positief punt. De performers zijn echt getalenteerd. De zangers zingen goed. Van hun spel kreeg ik helaas weinig mee. De afstand is in de arena te groot om gezichtsuitdrukkingen te kunnen lezen maar een aantal van de spelers heb ik eerder zien optreden en ik weet dat het aan hun talent zeker niet gelegen zal hebben. Dit blijkt ook wanneer in een klein stukje spreektekst het publiek en de spelers heel even los lijken te komen (buiten dit kleine moment wordt er alleen gezongen en het verhaal wordt verteld door de vertelstem van Tinkelbel en dit maakt dat je je als publiek nooit echt betrokken voelt in het verhaal). Er is focus, er wordt gelachen om de geïmproviseerd aandoende teksten en de kleine poppetjes op het toneel krijgen even een menselijke kant.

Ook de acrobaten en break-dancers zijn waanzinnig goed in wat ze doen. Echter, negen van de tien keer ging het volledig langs mij heen dat ze op het podium staan omdat er tegelijkertijd ook een liedje wordt gezongen, een projectie wordt afgespeeld op de achtergrond en er overal op het podium licht schijnt. Hierdoor ontvangen ze ook vaak geen applaus en als kijker die de spannende acrobaten act wel heeft gezien, krijg je het gevoel dat je het niet goed begrepen hebt als je de act wil belonen met een applaus. 

Dan de muziek. Er blijkt niets origineels te zijn aan de muziek. Zelfs arrangementen van liedjes zijn afkomstig uit bestaande producties of films. Dit hoeft niet per definitie een zwaktebod te zijn als de stukken goed passend worden uitgezocht. Maar stijlbreuken zijn hier eerder regel dan uitzondering. Een voorbeeld: Wanneer we het huis van de familie Darling binnen treden wordt 'Our House' van Madness ingezet. Persoonlijk ben ik groot fan van de ska van Madness, ik vind het alleen geen plaats hebben in een 19de eeuwse scène in een herenhuis waar een ouderpaar zich voorbereid voor een gala. Kostuums en decor stralen hier totaal iets anders uit dan de muziek en dat maakt dat je als kijker niet mee wordt genomen in één sfeer. Ook dit is in feite een gemis aan focus. Er is niet één geldende gedachte waar deze scène over gaat en dat is helaas het geval voor de hele voorstelling.

Omdat de muziekkeuze geen toevoeging is aan het verhaal dat verteld wordt maken de liedjes een langdradig indruk. Het duurde als ik mij goed herinner een uur voordat Peter, Wendy, Michiel en Jan aankomen in Neverland. Ter vergelijking, in de meeste versies wordt voor dit verloop hooguit 15 minuten uitgetrokken. Naast de liedjes doen ook veel spectaculaire elementen langdradig aan. Het verrassende en adembenemende effect is veel groter wanneer er kort wordt stilgestaan bij een acrobatisch act of iemand die echt vliegt. Wanneer mensen het gevoel hebben "heb ik dit echt gezien?" maakt een voorstelling veel meer indruk dan wanneer men denkt "ja, nou weet ik het wel". 

Alles is constant in the picture en dit heeft tot gevolg dat veel toeschouwers het gevoel hebben dat ze de meest indrukwekkende elementen missen. Bovendien wordt op de achtergrond een projectie afgespeeld die ontzettend afleidt maar niets toevoegt. Daarbovenop worden veel van die projecties tijdens de scène herhaald en zo wordt ze helemaal overbodig.

Fans van de originele Peter Pan kunnen hun hart ophalen want het verhaal dat door deze arena voorstelling wordt verteld blijft trouwer aan het originele verhaal van J.M. Barrie dan ik in welke andere versie dan ook heb gezien. Echter dit brengt met zich mee dat menig liefhebber van de Disneyfilm (zonder kennis van Barrie's originele werk) zich afvraagt waarom het verhaal zo is aangepast door producent MusicHall. Welk na 1953 (het jaar dat Disney Peter Pan verfilmde) geboren kind weet dat er sprake is van een nimmervogel, dat het Haak lukt Peter ernstig te verwonden, dat Peter op twee piraten na alle piraten uitmoord nadat de piraten genocide hebben gepleegd op het indianenvolk?

Reacties van het publiek zijn sterk uiteenlopend: of men vindt het fantastisch vanwege het spektakel of men vind het verschrikkelijk langdradig en verlaat in de pauze zelfs de zaal. Ik neig naar de laatste categorie maar desalniettemin kan ik niet anders dan het slotapplaus gigantisch te noemen. Bovendien zat voor mij een meisje van, ik denk, een jaar of 6. Haar reactie alleen al was priceless: ze zat ademloos te kijken naar alles wat er gebeurde, als er een vrolijk liedje klonk wiebelde ze mee met de muziek met haar armen in lucht en na afloop hoorde ik haar zeggen dat ze eigenlijk nog wel een keer naar Peter Pan wilde. Tja, dan kan ik met mijn dramaturgisch inzicht zeggen wat ik wil maar dit meisje heeft duidelijk een magische avond gehad.

Peter Pan, The Never Ending Story is in Nederland nog te zien op 26 en 27 oktober in Ahoy Rotterdam. Kaarten zijn te bestellen via See Tickets. In België speelt de voorstelling nog 1 maal op 23 oktober in Vorst Nationaal in Antwerpen.

English: With great expectation I went to Ziggo Dome to view "the next big thing". My expectations were high, not in the least because production company MusicHall made big promises in the announcements of their first Arena Tour. The announcement gave me the feeling that the production would be at least as surprising and captivating as 'Soldaat van Oranje'. I am sorry that I need to say that it really doesn't even make sense to mention 'Soldaat van Oranje' and 'Peter Pan The Never Ending Story' in the same sentence. 

I'll start on a positive note. The performers are greatly talented. The singers have great voices. I didn't see much of their acting skills though. The distance in the arena is much to big to be able to see any facial expression. I have seen some of the performers in other productions and I know that they are very capable. This shows, when at one point a little dialogue is played (besides this short moment there are only songs and the story is told by the voice of Tinkerbel, because of this the audience doesn't really connect with the characters and their story). At this particular moment the characters become human, the audience laughs at the seemingly improvised dialogue and there is focus on just one thing on the stage.

The acrobats and break-dancers are often amazing at what they do. But, nine out of ten times I didn't notice they were on stage. At the same time they do their act, a song is sung by one of the principals, a projection is seen on the background and the light seems to be focused on the stage as a whole. Because of this, they don't receive any applause either because to few people notice them to sound as an applause in this massive space.

Music then. It seems none of the music is original, even arrangements are directly copied from another production or movie. This doesn't have to be a bad thing per se, if the music is carefully chosen to fit the situations. But there doesn't seem to be a general thought about the music, it's a mixture of genres and languages. And most importantly, in most cases it doesn't seem to fit the scenes. For example, during the first scene in the Darling household the song 'Our House' by Madness is sung. Now, I like Madness a lot, but ska isn't really something I find consistent with a scene in a mansion in the nineteenth century where two parents are preparing to go to a gala. The costumes and scenery seem to be telling something else than the music and it withholds the audience to be immersed into the story. This too is a lack of focus. A main general thought about what each scene should be about is missing. 

Because the chosen music doesn't complement the story it gives the impression of being long-winded. If I remember correctly, it took a full hour before Peter, Wendy, Michael and John arrive in Neverland. In most versions this doesn't take more than 15 minutes. Besides the songs being long-winding some spectacular acrobat acts go on for much to long as well. The surprising and breathtaking effect is much bigger when you see a great acrobatic act when it's short. It makes a much more memorable evening if you thought "wait, did I really see that just now" than "alright, I've seen it, move on".

As I mentioned before there is a lack of focus. Everything is constantly in the spotlight. This leads to a lot of people having the feeling that they are missing the most impressive things. On top of all the different things happening there is a projection on the background that is very distracting but not really complementing. The animation that is projected is also looped most of the time which makes it even more redundant. 

Fans of the original 'Peter Pan' may be surprised though, because the story that MusicHall is telling sticks more to the original that J.M. Barrie wrote than any other version of Peter Pan that I have ever seen. But as a result many a lover of the Disneymovie (who doesn't know the original) will be puzzled why MusicHall made the decision to change so much about the story. Who, born after 1953 (the year that Disney's 'Peter Pan' was released) knows about the never bird, knows that Hook at one point severely injures Peter and that Peter kills all but two pirates after they massacred the indians?

The reactions from the audience are very mixed: either people love it because it's a big spectacle or they find it terribly long-winding and even leave the arena during the break. As you'll have guessed from this review, I'm tilting towards the opinion of the last group of people. But I can not interpret the ovation at the end of the performance as anything else than grand. Besides this, in the chair in front of me was a girl of about six years old. Her reactions were priceless: she watched the whole show as if she had never seen anything like it before (and she probably hadn't), she had her hands in the air with every cheerful song and when the show was over I heard her say that she'd really like to go see 'Peter Pan' again. Well, I can say anything I want but I can't argue against the fact that there is no doubt that this girl had a magical evening.

Van sommige dingen heb ik het gevoel dat ik er nooit genoeg kan hebben. Lettertypen zijn zoiets waar ik dat gevoel van heb. Vandaag heb ik weer een hoop erg mooie lettertypen gedownload en ik wil ze graag met jullie delen. Ze zijn allemaal gratis te downloaden met een simpele google actie.

Ik ben dol op lettertypes die verwijzen een bepaalde historische periode. Bij deze zoektocht kwam ik een hoop door Art Deco geïnspireerde lettertypes tegen.

Wie mijn blog een tijdje volgt weet dat ik regelmatig vintage foto's post. Vooral ook foto's die ik zelf bijzonder vind maar waar op de achterkant niets op staat over het jaartal waarin de foto is gemaakt plaats ik hier graag. Foto's waarvan wel duidelijk is in welk jaar ze zijn gemaakt kun je ook online bekijken, namelijk op mijn Pinterest. Toen ik voor het eerste hoorde over Pinterest (met dank aan de blog VixenVintage) was ik meteen enthousiast. Ik ben dol op mooie plaatjes en ik had, voor ik Pinterest ontdekte, nogal de neiging om een heleboel plaatjes op mijn computer op te slaan. Dat is nu niet meer nodig en Pinterest heeft voor mij als dramaturg nog een tweede groot voordeel. Van elk tijdperk heb ik een prikbord gemaakt zodat ik nu in 1 oogopslag inspiratie op kan doen voor elk modebeeld dat bij een bepaald tijdperk hoort. Ik heb pinboards voor de 17de, 18de en 19de eeuw. En voor elk decennium tussen 1900 en 1960. Of ik maak een pinboard om beeldmateriaal te verzamelen voor een bepaalde productie waar ik aan werk. Zo heb ik bijvoorbeeld een pinboard aangemaakt toen ik werkte aan een voorstelling over Marlene Dietrich.

Op de site van het Victoria & Albert Museum staat per decennium een uitgebreide beschrijving van hoe je foto's kunt dateren aan de hand van de kleding die de mensen op de foto dragen. Er is een pagina na voor elk decennium tussen 1840 en 1960.

Mijn andere prikborden bestaan uit dingen die ik mooi vind. Zo heb ik er één voor foto's van plaatsen waar ik ben geweest en die ik graag zou bezoeken. Ik heb een pinboard vol met Jeugdsentiment, een pinboard met silhouetten, een prikbord met miniaturen en ik ben pas een board begonnen vol vintage theaterfotografie.

English: Pinterest is ideal for someone like me who used to collect hundreds of beautiful pictures on there computer. Now I can just pin them and save lots of room on my hard drive. But for me as a dramaturg, Pinterest is also very useful because I made boards for several era's. Now, if I need an impression of how the fashion in a specific an era looks I just look at the pinboard for the era and I'll be overloaded with ideas. I made boards for the 17th, 18th and 19th century. And a board for every decade between 1900 and 1960. Occasionally I make a pin board for a theater production I'm working on. Like the one I made for a production about Marlene Dietrich. 

If your trying to date your own vintage photos, the site of the Victoria & Albert Museum might be helpful. They describe how you can date your photos by looking at the clothes people in the picture are wearing. They have a page for every decade between 1860 and 1960.  

Other boards I made are filled with things I think are beautiful. I have one filled with Youth sentiment, silhouettes, miniatures and recently I started one with vintage theater photography.
